The Chronology of Postal Authorities Issuing Stamps in Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina

Introduction

This is a chronological list of various stamp issuing administrations (states, territories, local issues, occupational provisionals etc.) on the territory of Croatia and Bosnia-Herzegovina from the beginning of use of stamps in mid 19th cent. till nowdays. When I was considering to do it I was in doubt weather to do it for Croatia only or to include B&H, or to include all of the former Yugoslavia. My decision was, as you can see, to include B&H because there is to many common events, but it would be to much if I would include more.

Dynamic political situation in this area resulted in complicated history of stamps as of everything else. Due to that I am giving maps of this area in different moments of history. Links with sign [MAP] are to these maps. These map I made myself, so they don't represent any official standpoint. They were made with help of various books and historical atlases and I think that they are correct. There is always possibility of different historical interpretation but I tried to stick to facts only. It is also to note that they represent postal history maps more than political maps so there is possibility of difference with "real" history maps in your atlas.

I also give short explanation on political situation with every map. Hope you like 'em.

There is a political map of the region [MAP].

The list is divided in 5 historical periods:

  • before 1918
  • between the two World Wars
  • World War II
  • post WWII
  • after the breaking of Yugoslavia
  • In each period there is a list of stamp issuing states and their local issues. If available, there are given the periods when the stamps where valid or when there was a change in a state system.

The names that appears on stamps are given in BOLD FIXEDFONT , and if there was no indication of name (as usual on early stamps) the sign -- was used. If Cyrillic alphabet was used it was indicated with "in cyr.", and also "in cyr. and lat." if both Cyrillic and Latin alphabets ware used. I still miss special "Slavic" characters here or there.

In some cases there is a number of total stamps issued. The number is usually given as X+Y, where X is a total number of "usual" stamps (definitives and commemoratives), and Y is total of postage due stamps, official stamps etc.

The currency used is given in $: fixedfont .

I am, still, working on this page, so probably there are some errors. I would be very grateful if you inform me if you find any. Also, suggestions and comments are welcome.
